Sciatica

Never heard such word until the emergency physician told me that last week. Uncomfortable pain, running through my leg, from buttocks all the way to my brown toes was really bothersome. Numbness was present on my foot also. I couldn’t sit, stand, or even lay down. I was making everyone uncomfortable too by looking at me crying.

Hubby decided to take me to the emergency last week.

Friday at 4:00 pm last week, dinner was all done and kitchen was cleaned. I went online to “farm”. This sounds crazy, but somehow the virtual farming is fun. That is where I spent most of my time if I am not doing the chores, gardening, cleaning, or sitting around. I have other projects that is on going outside and is being put on hold or just touch a little bit just so I can tell myself that I have done something today..!! Not a good thing.

Hubby came in the kitchen to find me crying in pain. He said, what happened, I replied, my back is hurting. I can’t stand. He said, sit down. I am getting annoyed at this time now and said, “NO, I can’t sit either” He tried to massage my back. He helped me walked to the living room so I can elevate my leg. That didn’t work. So, I decided to shower up and get ready for bed at 6 pm. Did that and went to lay down on my comfy bed. I was still crying in pain. I just couldn’t seem to get rid of it.

I took 2 of 500mg Tylenol and waited for it to work. Well, two hours into it, nothing seems to be happening but pain. I couldn’t turn my leg without screaming in pain. Hubby came to ask me if I am interested in taking vicodin that he saved from two yrs ago, huh, they do get spoiled. No wonder it didn’t worked for me.

All through the night, he wanted to know if I want him to take me to the hospital and I said, “no dear, I’ll get through”. Morning came, I was very cranky. Hubby didn’t get to sleep either since I made noises and cried at times. I felt bad.

Matt had soccer game at 1 pm. I said to hubby that he can drop me off at the emergency then he can take Matt to play and came back to hospital when done. He called my daughter instead. He was lucky that she was able to helped us out by taking his little bro to the soccer while hubby and I at the emergency.

Nurse took my vitals and was wheeled to the other wing where I waited for the physician to diagnose me. .Half an hour later, the physician said to me, “base on what you are telling me, you have Sciatica”. I asked, what is that? She explained to me what is it and how I may have gotten it. Gave me pictures of it to point where and how it became.

She then told me that they were going to open up my veins so they can inject the meds for faster relief. Gave me basics meds for pain relief but that didn’t work after 30 minutes. Told the nurse that it didn’t work so then she came back with wonder med…Morphine came to my rescue. What an instant relief. I was able to get up within 5 minutes. Holly macaroni is what came out of my mouth. Unbelievable, I guess there is that instant stuff. I never had it before.

After 30 minutes laying down in that hospital bed, nurse came and I said, I am ready to go home and do jumping jacks for a while., she laughed. She said, I will be back with your released papers and prescriptions.

So now I know what Sciatica is. My sciatic nerve was pinched or pulled somehow then inflamed and that's how I felt the hurt.  I stopped taking the vicodin as I don't need it much. The inflammatory medication is almost done and hopefully I will be feeling normal next week.

We got home before it got dark. Matt’s team won. That added to my happiness. He was excited to see me smiling and cuddling to him again.
